Major Arcana ( Reversed )

The Major Arcana  is at the heart of the Tarot. A whole range of human life and experience is represented by the Major Arcana. It is symbolic of physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects of humankind. The cards are thought to illustrate the strengths, hopes and fears, weaknesses, the most godly and darkest parts of an individual. In Tarot readings, these meanings can change significantly depending on whether or not the card appears in its upright or reversed position. Other factors that can determine a card’s meaning can include where the card appears in a Tarot spread.

0 The Fool
It is one of those times when prudence is needed but you still may be tempted to throw caution to the wind. You still have plenty of enthusiasm but luck has momentarily left you. In love, the person who has your heart may turn out to be selfish and unable to commit. Like with financial risks, take time before investing. You may realize that you are more conventional than you thought. Other people's eccentricities that you may have found charming now just rub you the wrong way.

1 The Magician
When the Magician is reversed, you may find yourself unable to make a choice. You've spent time considering the possibilities but you're stuck in your thoughts. Plans or opportunities that seemed like sure things haven't panned out - is the problem lack of commitment or lack of resources? You still have choices to make, especially about priorities. You are the only person who can bring your dreams to life.

2 The High Priestess
In the times when the High Priestess is reversed, it is the time for observation not action. Your
problems are deeper than you thought. You need time to understand what is really going on before committing to a course of action. Sometimes, the High Priestess reversed can indicate that you are hiding your intuitive feelings or trying to hide from another secret part of yourself. You may be surrounding yourself with empty chatter and shallow friends as a distraction. In some cases, this card can refer to hidden destructive forces around you. This is a time to understand the situation rather than attempting to change it.

3 The Empress
When the Empress is reversed, the energy that is normally so abundant has been stalled or blocked. You may be experiencing financial or creative losses, disappointments in relationships and general discomforts. Your home seems less comfortable somehow and your pleasures are diminished. When times are hard, it is even more difficult when there is no end in sight. The Empress reminds us that there is a time and a season for everything and no matter the challenges, this too will pass. You may need to give yourself a little nudge though.

4 The Emperor
When the Emperor is reversed, it may seem like nothing you do can affect change in your life. While this may be a time where authority figures feel particularly constraining, learning to work with rules and regulations now may be the key to future successes. If you are used to having power, you may find that your are forced to work with others; your perspective could see this as a loss of authority. This could also be a time where you have to work through a relationship with a dominant partner or parent.

5 The Hierophant
As the Hierophant becomes reversed, you may feel as if a revolution has begun deep inside yourself. You will march to the beat of your own drum and want to thoroughly cast away all the rules and structure that has been drilled into you. This may be a time where you discover that the religion you were born with no longer resonates with you and you are searching for new answers. It is a time where you need to be cautious in the advice you receive and realize that anything you commit to now will disappoint you later.

6 The Lovers
When the Lovers is reversed, there seems to be something missing in your relationships. Control becomes an issue and dysfunction and miscommunication are the norm. Some difficulties may stem from jealousy or insecurity but really other issues are below the surface. If you are offered the chance to take part in an affair, think carefully. While it may satisfy your physical desires, emotionally you may end up losing out. Another possibility is that your partner may not be completely honest with you at this time. Delay any decision until you can see the entire situation clearly.

7 The Chariot
When the Chariot is reversed, you have become your own worst enemy. When you view other people's successes, you are jealous and dismiss the hard work. Addiction can cloud your ambition and you are convinced that the world owes you something. While you have talents, you never use them to your fullest advantage. A lack of self-belief may be holding you back but really you just have to commit to action. A plan is needed now, to best use your abilities and keep you focused.

8 Strength
The faith and love that made you believe anything was possible has vanished - you are left with fear and doubts. Without rediscovering your courage, you have a hard time moving forward and reaching for success. In some cases, the meaning of this Tarot card can refer to someone who has given up, on themselves and life's opportunities. It is important to realize that the only thing standing in the way of change and transformation is fear and the doubt it creates.

9 The Hermit
Some people need to be surrounded by friends or family at all times - they fear loneliness. When the Hermit is reversed, the meaning of this card can be interpreted as solitary confinement. You want and need people around you but are still very much alone. Often, this need for company is to distract from internal issues. Part of having growth and maturity is the ability to see and accept yourself as you are now. If you receive some advice at this time, it will be foolish to ignore it. Examine your objections. It could be that your desire to ignore this suggestion comes more from stubbornness than anything else. The Hermit reversed calls your attentions to distractions of every kind. There is nothing wrong with relaxing as long as your obligations are also being met.

10 The Wheel of Fortune
When the Wheel of Fortune is reversed, this Tarot card seems to bring bad luck that you can't quite shake...yet. Don't fear that this phase will last forever. Just like in every other area of life, there is a time and a season for everything. Now is not the time to forge ahead with new plans but to bide your time. Like the Chariot taught us, we can accomplish more by
working with the energies of the universe than to work against them. This is a time of unexpected problems, delays, and issues galore.

11 Justice
Any legalities or disputes will take longer to be resolved. Delays, injustice and a general imbalance come to light when this card is reversed. Court dates will get moved, legal fees will climb and it seems like nothing in life is fair. Divorce and other settlements will not favour you and anything that involves a contract or paperwork will get complicated and confused. Other times when Justice is reversed, this Tarot card can indicate that a marriage may be dissolved. If this is the case, it could be a very amicable split. There are no hard feelings or troubles arriving at terms - it is just a case that both parties realize that they have grown apart.

12 The Hangedman
When the Hanged Man Tarot card is reversed, it can indicate that you are caught up in material issues and can be too self-absorbed. It is always important to take care of yourself but you need to also see the world around you. Bad investments and financial losses can also affect you now. You are being reminded to remember that you need to be conscious of your actions and the price that results from them.

13 Death
When the Death card is reversed, it reveals that this is a time when you are resisting change. Your stubbornness is creating a stale environment around you, which drains your energy and slows you down. Life feels like it has lost its sparkle; you feel like you're living in perpetual deja vu. Variety is the spice of life; trying to prevent it is just establishing a boring status quo. If there are other positive, energetic cards around it, Death reversed can mean that it is time to wait and see. Watch what's going on and bide your time. Once you allow yourself to acknowledge that you are ready to move on, a new cycle will begin.

14 Temperance
Arguments and misunderstandings abound when Temperance is reversed. It doesn't seem to matter what you try, life is out of balance and harmony is absent. It may seem like there is not enough time to get things done. Sometimes it can show you that spreading yourself too thin is dividing your energy and stopping you from accomplishing things. Emotions run high and at work or home, you feel unnecessary competition spurring you on.

15 The Devil
When the Devil is reversed, this Tarot card is telling you that your attitudes towards money, power or sex are likely unbalanced. You are absolutely absorbed by the material world and may be stuck in a greedy and self-absorbed mindset. At the same, it is hard for you to let go of this need for more and you may feel trapped and depressed. Relationships at this time can be equally unbalanced, usually with one partner calling all the shots. In spite of issues, there may be an element of bondage in this relationship that makes it hard to leave. It might be illogical to everyone around you but many people do stupid things in the name of love.

16 The Tower
When the meaning for this Tarot card is reversed, the effects become even more revolutionary and chaotic. While the Tower often seems like a punishment, when it is reversed, it seems less fair. The company you work for could go out of business without warning with all employees laid off; this may lead to the time you need to discover a much-loved second career. When you are in the midst of experiencing these changes, you may feel like you need to know why. Sometimes indicate prison or being stuck in a situation. While you might not be able to free yourself right now, the freedom you seek will come but it has a price.

17 The Star
When this Tarot card is reversed, its meaning connects to the dark moments of the heart when it feels like nothing will ever work. At this low point, you may doubt your abilities and what you can achieve. While this is connected to recent events you perceive as failures, you're also worn down and need a break. In spite of your exhaustion, you refuse to relax and let go. The Star still offers the chance of success. It is a time where you would benefit from removing yourself from this situation and taking a change to reassess before continuing. In terms of relationships, this card can refer to a period where emotions are detached and there is a lack of sharing in a relationship; tension and pessimism may play a role in this.

18 The Moon
When the Moon is reversed, you are entering a period where the line between dreams and reality has become blurred. You may have false people around you or find it hard to be honest with yourself. In the resulting chaos, nothing is concrete and everything is more than a little confusing. It's not the time to bet on anything. Job offers will evaporate, potential homes will be bad investments: nothing is what it seems. Keep your ideas to yourself and be wary of any advice you receive. Depression, alcoholism, drug abuse, and illness can all appear when the Moon is reversed.

19 The Sun
While the Sun's warmth is crucial for growth and development, the Sun reversed can indicate too much of a good thing. You haven't backed up your hopes with solid action. Success starts from an idea but takes a lot of hard work to become a reality. In terms of relationships, you might be travelling down some rocky roads. It may feel like you aren't respected or ignored but there is a lot of history in this relationship. The same sort of troubles can also influence business relationships. Behind the quarrels, there is a feeling of imbalance that affects everything. Children can be a concern, especially in terms of illness. In many cases, this may be fear more than reality. If there are other positive cards around, success will arrive but take a little longer.

20 Judgement
When Judgement is reversed, you may be wishy-washy about making a much-needed decision. This inability to commit to a decision is creating a boring void in your life. Now is the time to make up your mind and move ahead. If you don't decide, a decision will be made for you. Often Judgement relates to a fear of change. You might be someone who is dependent on routine and avoids decisions whenever possible. Emotionally, Judgement can indicate a painful loss that you haven't yet recovered from. You may be parted from your lover or have to spend time away from your family due to work.

21 The World
Success is so close that you can taste it but is still elusively out of reach. On occasion, the opposite can be true - you've reached that pinnacle but want to resist moving forward. Enjoy your successes but you will reach a point where you do have to move again. You can't stop the passage of time. Relationships influenced by the World may be over but unresolved. Lingering like a bad odor, you'll need to revisit the past before you can move forward and let things go. A previous bad ending may be making you reluctant to love again - with The World, you can be assured that a positive relationship is waiting for you if you are open to it. When related to work, The World reversed can suggest a feeling of panic or lack of planning. You don't feel ready for whatever lies ahead and completion is being delayed. The World is a powerful and positive card regardless of its position and it brings wonderful change at its own pace. Let go and enjoy the ride.
